leaves home friday night under great duress… situations shameful to family… finds charming home… finds a chicken salad, a beer and an acquaintance… finds a friend… finds a game of pool… finds a bed and a thunderstorm…

wakes up and finds coffee… sends note of finest love to treasure… takes longest relationship for longest walk… takes time getting nowhere… visits a friend… and another… walks back to charming home… drives home and finds drives… finds deception and leaves despondent… finds beer at the charming home and sits on the stoop… friends visit… long walk to art market… sinking… finds pizza… long walk back… sinking… finds beer… drinks beer on the stoop with friends… friends leave… finds friend with admirable work ethic… find camera… finds tequila… finds pizza… finds party… finds the mam…

finds a reprieve… finds food… finds beer… shoots… dances… finds silliness in teasing… shoots and dances… shoots tequila… shoots while dancing… dances…

finds friends driving near charming home… finds a bed and drifts…

wakes up and finds coffee… finds the sun… finds the stoop… talks… sinking… talks… sinking… talks… sinking… paces between the stoop and the vines… restless… finds clothes… finds gear… finds friends… finds burgers… finds a game of pool… finds the road…

finds distance… finds shanty town… finds night air… hears an owl… drifts…

Photo Friday consists of a group of international photographers that share one photo per week, as if sending a postcard. It’s simply an email list that I start on Fridays. If you’d like to be added to the list, send me an email with “Photo Friday” in the subject line. You’ll be added next week.

america’s weekend

mam05_0907-12

So I didn’t get to go to Rothbury. I couldn’t afford it, the stars didn’t line up for me, etc. I decided not to sulk and just pursue good shooting among friends, which I guess started way back on Thursday night, with salsa at Hop Cat. The MAM has really grown accustom to my shooting, as they become more emotionally open both on and off the camera. This night, however, was all about dancing, so I tried my best to get meaningful shots while not being entirely stuck behind the lens. Life requires involvement, after all.

There’s always a girl whispering something in Hugo’s ear. Note to self:  shoot a series about it.

Friday was a little more white-bread for me, but always a good time no matter what. I started off with an afternoon photo shoot, helping my buddy Rich promote one of his events, the Bazooka Rally. If you like road rallies then you’ll want to check out this “2009 Semi Eco Edition”.

The fun part of the day was hanging out with Rich and Angela and their kids, grilling, throwing back beer, and hanging out in the neighborhood. Rich has this great space in the city that’s taking the shape of a homemade amusement park. Think zip wires and water slides. Climbing trees and herb gardens.

It’s not really my event to promote, but if you know Rich, you’re not going to want to miss a killer party that’s coming soon. I wouldn’t miss shooting it, and you shouldn’t miss out on the fun.

Ah, summer and kid games. If you want a really great workout, try light sabre sword fights with people about one forth (or less) your age. And I didn’t have a zip wire growing up – talk about lucky… but there’s still plenty of fun to have as an adult. Probably the best part of my day was when Rich told me to hop on a tandem bike for a cruise around the neighborhood. I didn’t know we were going to stop at the Winchester for a lemon drop and a beer back.

Rich said something really interesting. To paraphrase, he said of all the material things, the worst to loose would be the images, because they are slices of time that you can’t replace. I have to agree. I guess that makes time our biggest personal commodity.

And then it’s Saturday, the 4th of July.

What’s more American than a good old protest against government spending, bailouts, so-called stimulus, and the folks
in congress who sign bills without reading them? Nothing new to me here, except for a little public handgun posturing. Other than that, I’ve shot all this stuff already, so it was on to the clan of Grinwis for snacks and beer and burgers, where I found Reid playing with his first sparkler. Go Reid! This is classic.

Later on, back with the MAM for a little rooftop gathering. The thing I like about my friend Lindsay is that she isn’t afraid to grab my camera and turn it on me. It’s a nice reminder that I need slices of time too.

Then the fireworks. The MAM was in great form this night, and the gathering turned into an 80’s dance party. I swear, I swear, Shelby made the best salsa I’ve every had (and I’ve had my share.) Fireworks, mojitos, sangria, beer, salsa, pizza, dancing… I have to call it a great 4th of July.

The next day the gang met at Lindsay’s for lunch. There was Trinidadian Black Eye’d Pea Soup, stuffed mushrooms, sangria, bread and cheese, sweets, and Korean popcicles. A nice breeze blew in on the stoop as the gang started dropping off for naps. Some afternoons, you can take photographs in you head, and that’s good enough.

what wakes you up?

Tiny birds, then later, rain hitting the tent. Recorded this morning. Put it on in the background… it will make your day better.
