I've grown accustom to packing a camera for most social situations. Some people want to pose when they see one with a camera in hand, but most friends are familiar with me fumbling with dials and buttons enough that we symbiotically ignore each other. It becomes a nice comfort level. They carry on with their social ambitions, and I find slices of time they might appreciate... if not now, eventually.
